The HUB Lighting & Innovation by Kafkas team undertook the lighting design of a woman’s clinic in the center of Athens. The main objective of the study was to create a space that is familiar and welcoming, both for patients and staff, and that overturns the general perception that medical practices are cold and distant places. For this reason, luminaires with a color temperature of 3000K were used to favor this condition.
The type of space and the needs it had to serve determined the way in which the lighting was selected in each of them.
More specifically, in the waiting areas and reception, a magnetic rail system was chosen for greater flexibility in terms of lighting, which serves the needs of the space each time, as well as recessed spots (swap), which give a more dramatic and atmospheric effect. At the same time, decorative luminaires complement the architectural lighting, giving a sense of luxury and intimacy.
The examination rooms require rich and functional lighting. For this reason, linear recessed profiles (bright line) were chosen to provide uniform and diffuse light.
In the office spaces there was a need for a more luxurious lighting. Thus, a custom linear recessed luminaire (black foster) was used to provide general lighting, which has the light source recessed and high UGR, elements that prevent glare. This, combined with the concealed lighting in the ceiling, created a mild and uniform lighting that promotes calm and confidence, elements essential for a medical practice. Finally, the decorative fixtures complemented the lighting, while enhancing the sense of luxury that was the goal of the design.
An important element of the space were the many recesses in which sculptures, plants or other decorations have been placed. Small recessed spotlights with a narrow beam (shot) were placed there to highlight these elements and make them points of interest.
