Light as a Voice for Ideas, Knowledge and Social Change
A new initiative by HUB Lighting & Innovation by KAFKAS brings light into focus as something far more than a design tool: a medium for expression, culture, creativity and social connection.
The production of “The enLIGHTening Vidcast – Light as a Voice” was completed in recent days, bringing together at HUB Ilioupoli a distinguished group of architects, academics and lighting designers for a series of thematic conversations exploring the multifaceted role of light in contemporary architecture, everyday life and the arts.
The conversations featured Lampros Doulos, Stelios Zerefos, Christina Thanasoula, Katia Kolovea, Theofili Machairidi, Katerina Skalkou, Anna Sbokou, Foivos Skroubelos, George Tellos, Anastasia Filippopoulou and Konstantinos Chadios. The discussions were moderated by Christina Moudara, Lighting Design Manager at HUB, and Michalis Andrikopoulos, Building Technologies Manager.
Through dialogue and the exchange of diverse perspectives, the series seeks to highlight how light shapes the way we perceive, experience and reinterpret space.
From Dialogue to a Collective Lighting Installation
At the heart of this initiative lies the transformation of dialogue into a collective creative expression. Inspired by the conversations with architects and lighting designers, the lighting installation brings their personal reflections and perspectives on light beyond the spoken word, translating them into a shared spatial composition.
At the end of each conversation, every guest shares a personal social message, which is then inscribed on an individual piece of plexiglass. These individual elements will come together to form a unified, illuminated architectural installation, in which each voice retains its own identity while becoming part of a broader collective expression.
The installation embodies creativity, the exchange of knowledge and the strength of community. It gives visibility to the diverse voices of the lighting community, highlighting what connects us and fostering a sense of participation and belonging.
From the International Lighting Community to a Meaningful Social Purpose
The installation will be presented for the first time at the IEEE Sustainable Smart Lighting World Conference – LS2026, taking place in Athens from 2 to 4 December 2026. In an international setting that brings together professionals, architects, lighting designers, academics and researchers, the installation will extend the conversation beyond the technical and design dimensions of light, bringing its human and social significance to the forefront.
Yet the journey of this initiative will not end there. In May 2027, marking the occasion of the International Day of Light, the installation will become the centrepiece of a special charity event. The social messages shared by the participants will be connected to a meaningful educational cause: collecting school supplies, books and educational materials for the schools operating within paediatric hospitals.
In this way, a creative initiative centred on light will take on a broader purpose, connecting knowledge and professional experience with giving back and supporting education.
Because light is not only what enables us to see. It is also what helps us express ourselves, connect with one another and create CHANGE.
Through “The enLIGHTening Vidcast – Light as a Voice”, HUB Lighting & Innovation by KAFKAS creates a space for diverse voices to come together, transforming individual ideas into a shared statement of light with a meaningful social impact.
