Hotel Luxembourg – Architectural Façade Lighting
The architectural lighting design of the Hotel Luxembourg, a protected heritage property, is based on a two-tiered lighting strategy aimed at both highlighting the geometric features of the building’s mass and accentuating the decorative vocabulary of its façade.
The design approach is structured around two primary lighting levels:
- Emphasis on the Architectural Volume Edges
The vertical edges of the building are illuminated using narrow-beam spotlights placed at the base of the four corner columns, directed upward. At the upper section, horizontal edges are subtly accentuated with integrated LED strips embedded in the roof cornice, creating a fine luminous outline that visually “crowns” the building. This linear lighting accent extends around the perimeter of the top floor, reinforcing the sense of suspension and uplifting the overall volume within the nighttime urban landscape.
- Highlighting Architectural Ornamentation
Between the balconies, wall-washer luminaires are installed to cast upward light, emphasizing the rich plasterwork details such as corbels, cornices, and the curved dormer pediments. This lighting adds plasticity and depth, enhancing the façade’s rhythm and materiality without compromising its historical character.
All luminaires were selected to provide focused illumination, minimize light pollution, and reduce glare, ensuring that the lighting enhances the architectural identity without adversely affecting the environment or pedestrian experience. The correlated color temperature is maintained at 2700K, offering a warm and natural rendering of material textures while conveying a sense of warmth and timeless elegance.
At the building’s entrance, rustic-style wall sconces with limited light dispersion are symmetrically installed on either side of the main door. These provide a welcoming glow and reinforce the inviting ambiance of the entry.
The lighting is seamlessly and discreetly integrated into the building’s architecture, creating a cohesive and legible nighttime identity that elevates its cultural significance and presence within the historic center of Thessaloniki.
