enLIGHTening Fridays: A New Educational Initiative at the HUB
First session: “Dimming / DALI – Understanding the Art of Control” with Georgios Mermigkis
At HUB Lighting & Innovation by Kafkas, we firmly believe that education is not a one-off requirement, but a continuous investment in knowledge, professional growth and excellence. Guided by this philosophy, we introduced enLIGHTening Fridays , a new series of monthly sessions designed to strengthen architectural dialogue around light and to cultivate a dynamic learning core within our team.
Once a month, on a Friday afternoon, we host distinguished professionals from the lighting industry: lighting designers, architects, engineers, educators and collaborators who share their knowledge, experience, methodologies and perspectives on key topics shaping contemporary practice.
A space for learning, collaboration and exchange of ideas
enLIGHTening Fridays have been conceived as a non-commercial educational initiative, open to professionals and collaborators who wish to contribute and exchange knowledge.
Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes and can take place either on-site or online, covering themes related to lighting, technology, design, culture and creative thinking.
Through enLIGHTening Fridays, we aim to cultivate an environment where:
-
knowledge is shared,
-
skills are strengthened,
-
architectural thinking is enriched,
-
and the team evolves collectively.
The first session:
“Dimming / DALI – Understanding the Art of Control”
The launch of the series was marked by a presentation by our colleague Georgios Mermigkis, focusing on the art and technology of lighting control.
During the session, we:
-
examined the fundamental principles of dimming and lighting control, analysing the advantages and limitations of different methodologies,
-
explored DALI, its logic and structure, its role in contemporary architectural lighting and the solutions it offers for complex building installations,
-
discussed the rationale behind selecting the appropriate automation system according to project requirements, enhancing interoperability and delivering multiple benefits in terms of comfort, management efficiency and resource optimisation.
This topic represents a cornerstone of every demanding architectural lighting project — from residential applications to hospitality environments and large-scale building infrastructures.
The speaker: Georgios Mermigkis
Georgios is one of our most experienced collaborators. He joined KAFKAS in 2014 and has been a core member of the HUB team since 2021. As an Electrical Engineer, he has developed extensive expertise in the design and implementation of automation systems, specialising in KNX solutions for both residential applications and large-scale projects.
In parallel, as a certified KNX Trainer, he actively contributes to the dissemination of contemporary building automation principles and best practices. His systematic and methodical approach is a key asset in the development of integrated lighting and smart building solutions.
enLIGHTening Fridays represent another step towards our goal of empowering the company’s human capital and fostering a culture of continuous learning, technical excellence and creativity beyond expectations.
