Visualizing Lighting Concept in Photoshop: From Concept to Night Atmosphere
On December 19, at HUB Lighting & Innovation by Kafkas and online via Teams, another session of the enLIGHTening Fridays series took place, featuring Tasos Apostolou as the presenter, under the title “Visualizing Lighting Concept in Photoshop.”
The presentation focused on the importance of visualizing a lighting concept as an essential communication tool in the design process, from the initial sketch to the final night-time atmosphere of a space. It highlighted how representation is not merely a technical step, but a critical part of conveying design intent.
What Was Presented
During the session, practical techniques and methodologies were analyzed, including:
-
The creation of Glow Plans as a tool for expressing lighting intent
-
The transformation of a day render into a night atmosphere
-
The development of a lighting concept starting from a hand sketch, using Adobe Photoshop as a storytelling tool rather than simply an image-editing platform.
Particular emphasis was placed on how accurate lighting visualization can communicate intention, emotion, and hierarchy, acting as a bridge between concept, design development, and presentation to clients or project teams.
The Speaker
Tasos Apostolou is an Environmental Engineer (MEng), with postgraduate studies in Applied Geoinformatics and a degree in Interior Architecture. His academic and professional background combines engineering, spatial analysis, and design, while his transition into interior architecture is reflected in his approach to lighting as a tool for composition and narrative.
His talk provided a meaningful, hands-on approach to lighting visualization, enhancing participants’ skills in how they present and communicate their design ideas effectively.
